Let’s discuss a very important matter…summer cocktails! Summer is a great time of year to relax on your patio or rooftop with friends and family and what better way to enhance the experience but with signature drinks!
Or maybe you’re hosting something a little more extravagant this summer, such as an engagement party, bridal shower or wedding. Caterers are more than happy to incorporate 1-2 signature drinks into your bar selection.
We’ve listed a few of our favorites, filled with flavor and gorgeous colors.
To keep up with tradition, it’s always good luck to have something blue on your wedding day. “The Something Blue” with blueberry vodka.
Lavender Lemonade (spiked or not) is always refreshing. The sprig of lavender adds an extra touch not to mention, a beautifully fragrant aroma.
Mango Mojitos pair nicely with a DIY taco bar for your guests. Invite us!
The shimmer and pop from a champagne flute is always one of our faves. Mix it up a little by adding some fresh raspberries and pair with a cheese plate. The Raspberry Sparkler.
Enjoy a Sparkling Pear with fresh pear garnish.

Combine one DJ, a pink carpet with picture-snapping paparazzi, cocktails and snacks; a beauty bar with make-up artists serving up smokey eye perfection and refreshing bold red lips to attendees; add in the latest fashions from designers like Diane Von Furstenberg, Theory, Derek Lam and Rebecca Minkoff and you’ve got On The Verge.
Gold Fringe was in attendance at the On The Verge shopping event in Neiman Marcus’ CUSP boutique hosted by Refinery 29 and Chicago blogger Liz Schneider of Sequins and Stripes. CUSP is the answer to a boutique experience—a hip space, leading designers, an expertly curated collection, but with all the conveniences of a department store. And though the CUSP experience is expanding beyond its fashion forward approach of online and select free-standing boutiques, to soon be included in all Neiman Marcus stores, Chicago is lucky enough to be home to one of its current choice locations.
Check out some CUSP items we’re coveting…
Thin, buttery soft, and the top half of a LWD, is the perfect way to do leather in the summertime.
It’s all in the details and we’re loving the grommets and piping on these dresses.
Grey and white, so simple but so chic.
Pretty reminders of what we’re always striving to achieve.
A little bit of humor in your fashion never hurts.
Experience Chicago’s best rooftops this summer!
by Kikanza Harris
We’re probably beginning to sound a little bit like a broken record talking about the seasonal shift into summer, but we just can’t help ourselves. After surviving “Chiberia” we keep finding reasons to celebrate summer over and over again. This week’s Friday Favorites are inspired by one of our favorite summer activities–eating, drinking and socializing on the rooftop.
Little Goat Diner – We’ve been following the rise of owner, Stephanie Izard since she became the first woman to win Bravo’s Season 4 of Top Chef. And we’re so happy to have her most recent edition Little Goat Diner, the fun little sister to the grown-up The Girl and The Goat, added to Randolph’s “Restaurant Row” corridor.
The Little Goat Diner hosts dining experiences (next up, an actual pig roast), cooking classes and specially selected days of good old fashion fun that’s open to the public in their private dining and rooftop space.
Suitsupply Co. – Ever thought about mixing men’s fashion with your rooftop soiree? Well this Amsterdam-based men’s retailer did when they created a store with a rooftop terrace that doubles as a private event space.
The Terrace at the Conrad – We highly recommend ordering one of their delicious mojitos to sip on as you lounge on the comfy couches to enjoy their “Sunday Night Movies” series with your honey.
III Forks – Looking for a good “Girls Night Out” space? Then we say “yes” to enjoy good cocktails and an equally appetizing menu on this contemporary rooftop serving up amazing steak and seafood.
Drumbar – You’ve hit the jackpot if you’re looking for visual variety, this space is like three in one. Upon entering into the dark and very masculine bar (dubbed on GQ.com as one of 10 Best Whiskey Bars in America) you may feel as though you should be sitting down on one of their traditional leather sofas to light-up a cigar with Mad Men’s Don Draper. But turn the corner and you’ve entered into a semi-private hallway sitting area with bright white subway tiled walls and a modern décor. And the modernism continues onto the rooftop patio, perfect for enjoying the summer breeze and lit by the city skyline.
This week’s picks include cool grilling tools and yummy recipes for a fun-filled BBQ!
by Margaret Williams
Summertime makes us think of BBQs – one of the best things about summer! Check out some great grilling tools to add to your arsenal along with some tasty recipes for sliders, grilled dessert and a refreshing cocktail for your next BBQ party.
The beautiful Himalayan pink salt plate offered by Williams-Sonoma adds amazing flavor to meats and seafood. It can also be chilled and used as a serving platter for fruit, vegetables and more.
I have to admit that I hate mess while I’m cooking. The adorable Squid Bottle Baster from Sur La Table helps eliminate sauce drippings when dressing up your grill delectables.
A summertime party is not complete without a refreshing cocktail. Try a Hibiscus Tequila Cooler courtesy of Food Network’s Ted Allen. YUM!
Bobby Flay’s Sliders with Chipotle Mayonnaise. Enough said. I would actually recommend trying these on Hawaiian bread rolls for a touch of sweetness.
You can always go with the expected grilled dessert: S’mores. Why not switch it up some and try Warm Plums with Gelato? This quick and easy recipe along with many other grilled summer fruits are available at FoodNetwork.com.
So…who’s hosting the next BBQ???
Warm weather = outdoor Chicago workout sessions…in style
by Margaret Williams
I don’t know about you but I’m tired of working out with Shaun T (no offense Shaun T – it’s more about staring at the TV)! With the arrival of warmer temperatures and the bright sun, it’s time to move our workouts outside.
Beginning tomorrow, June 7th, through September 6th, Millennium Park will host morning workout sessions including Tai Chi, Yoga, Pilates and Zumba. Not only can you improve your health while enjoying the summer weather, you have the beautiful Chicago skyline as your backdrop.
Let go of your old workout gear and replace it with items which also make you feel a little sexy while you sweat.
Add a pop of color to your ensemble by the way of your fun and functional footwear.
There’s nothing wrong with a little glam for your walk to and from Millennium Park. These gold shades add the perfect accent.
One of the most important things to remember when working out…hydrate! This chic insulated water bottle will keep your water cool.
As always, make sure to check out our Pinterest Friday Favorite 5 board for additional photos.
Get out there, enjoy the weather, the beautiful city and sweat!
Magnolia Atelier attends Ultimate Bride Chicago’s 2014 Spring/Summer Monique Lhuillier Trunk Show
by Kikanza Harris
After viewing the 2014 Spring/Summer Monique Lhuillier Trunk Show at Ultimate Bride Chicago, we came to realize the saying “necessity is the mother of invention” couldn’t be a more true statement. Lhuillier whose gorgeous wedding gowns give a nod to couture fashion, created her first collection in 1996 after searching for her own wedding dress and being dissatisfied with the options. Since then Lhuillier has dressed celebrities on the red carpet like Gwyneth Paltrow, Halle Berry, Reese Witherspoon and First Lady Michelle Obama. And her collection has expanded to include fashion, fine jewelry, lifestyle and of course all things bridal, from wedding gowns to bridesmaids dresses. Our favorite thing about this collection is Lhuillier understands that we women love choices (speaking in terms of fashion of course, grooms no need to worry) and Monique delivers with several dresses that have removable skirts! Also following the fashion trend of ballet inspired silhouettes and barely there watercolor pastels, this season’s Monique Lhuillier Bridal Collection runs the full gamut of pretty. Whether your version of pretty is a strapless gown with beading and a trumpet tulle bottom, a sleek and modern mix of satin and tulle in ball gown form, or a romantic sheath with full-on textured sleeves, Lhuillier’s skill for combining lace, embroidery, tulle and beaded embellishment is put together in the prettiest way.
Today’s Friday Favorite 5 for dreaming of a summer vacation in majestic Anguilla
by Margaret Williams
Summer is finally making its way to Chicago so we can’t help but daydream of a relaxing vacation in beautiful Anguilla. Let’s set the scene: the Viceroy Anguilla, a luxury resort with interiors designed by one of our favorite interior designers, Kelly Wearstler.
A seemingly low key swimsuit with a touch of gold…we just can’t help ourselves.
Love the drama with the asymmetrical hem line but especially vibin’ to the mix of patterns when added with our gold and white swimsuit.
Adorn your arm with this delicious arm candy. Two bracelets we’ve been consistently obsessed with from Van Cleef & Arpels and the iconic Cartier.
Tom Ford. ‘Nuff said.
We’re always about the bag. A great bag can do wonders. This lightweight cotton Louis Vuitton tote will easily store your iPad and other poolside essentials.

Magnolia Atelier Attends the Chez Grand Opening Event
by Margaret Williams
Chez, located in the heart of downtown Chicago at 247 East Ontario is a modern spin on a historic venue. From 1932-1960, this space was home to the popular nightclub, Chez Paree. Guests of the Chez Paree enjoyed the musical talents of Tony Bennett, Lena Horne, Cab Calloway, Nat King Cole, Tito Puente and Sarah Vaughan to name a few. The club also hosted famous comedians such as Sid Ceasar, Buddy Hackett and Mae West. This month, the space was unveiled to the event industry as a new venue of choice for weddings, cocktail receptions, corporate events and beyond.
At the grand opening event, the red carpet was rolled out for event planners and vendors to experience all that Chez has to offer! Upon our arrival, we were greeted by a couple adorned in traditional 1920s evening attire. The now modern, loft-like event space was drenched in beautiful magenta, violet and cerulean lighting. The glowing magenta bars flanked the large event space, with a specialty bar offering delectable cocktails from the all-women mixologists of Femme du Coupe. Moulin Rouge inspired arrangements flanked the bars with glistening crystal chandeliers towering high above from The Revel Group. Sumptuous hors d’oeuvres circulated around the room from some of our favorite caterers in the city including Limelight, Food for Thought, Entertaining Company and Wolfgang Puck. The pièce de résistance of the evening: the incredible cancan dancers who entertained in their all-black, feather embellished costumes, all upon the circular, multi-tiered stage in the middle of the room.
We are always excited to see a new venue enter the scene and our heads filled with ideas on how to transform Chez for any event. We look forward to the creative events this space will inspire along with hosting an event there in the future!
We are proud to announce our new blog, Gold Fringe! Although Magnolia Atelier specializes in transforming events into experiences, there are so many more facets to us. When we conceptualize and design events, we pull inspiration from many different areas: interior design, architecture, fashion and beyond. We’re always in search of new recipes (including cocktails), attending local events, dabbling in DIY art and home projects and we enjoy organizing stuff too (yes, maybe a little nerdy).
Gold Fringe will report on the events we attend, from industry cocktail parties to cooking demonstrations hosted by Bloomingdales Home – if we’re there, you’ll hear about it. We’ll share yummy recipes to try for your next dinner party or summer soiree along with showing you what new fashion statements inspire us. Don’t worry – we’ll make sure to keep you informed on all things Magnolia Atelier, through detailed event and client dossiers.
To help produce all of the upcoming dynamic post topics, we are excited to welcome our longtime event freelancer, friend and now, blog co-producer, Kikanza Harris to Gold Fringe! Together we will provide you with our points of view and discerning design perspectives as we experience the environments surrounding us.
Welcome to the enhanced Magnolia Atelier blog, Gold Fringe! We look forward to sharing our view of the world with you!
